Dip,
Baby, Dip (Semi-homemade Donuts with Homemade Dipping Sauce)
My mother was super strict about what my
sister and I ate when we were kids. We were only allowed one junk food a day. I
know, quelle horreur! But every once in a while she would loosen her grip and
let us have “homemade” donuts that were covered in cinnamon and sugar. If my mother was feeling fancy, or Jenna and I were little angels that week - ahem every week - my mother would make homemade dipping sauces.
My sister and I love these little doughy balls of joy so much that my mom still
makes them Christmas morning.
Here is my version of this Mahoney
family classic.
Ingredients:
1 16 oz can of pop and fresh biscuit
dough
1 Cup Sugar
2 tsp Cinnamon
4 Cups Vegetable oil
½ Cup Dark Chocolate
1/8 tsp Cayenne
Pinch Chili Powder
½ tsp Cinnamon
½ Tbsp Coconut Oil

Servings:
35-40 Doughnut Holes
Instructions:
Open the pop and fresh and place the
dough on a clean, floured surface. Cut the dough into small circles about two
inches in diameter – shot glasses are the perfect size – set aside. Heat the
oil to 375 degrees. Meanwhile put the 1Cup of Sugar and Cinnamon into a brown
paper bag. When the oil has reached the desired temperature, place the dough in
the hot oil - carefully - only up to five at a time. When they start to turn
golden brown on one side turn them over. Remove them from the oil and put them
in the brown paper bag. Close it and shake it until they are covered in the
sugar mixture. Repeat until all of the doughnuts are cooked.
Chocolate
Sauce
In a microwave safe bowl, put the dark
chocolate, cayenne, chili powder, cinnamon, and coconut oil into the microwave,
on high, for up to one minute or until melted. Set aside.
Caramel
Sauce
Heat the sugar on medium high heat in a
medium sauce pan until melted and bubbly. Once it is completely melted, add the
butter one piece at a time. It will bubble up so be careful. Slowly stream in
the heavy cream whisking the entire time. Continue to stir until the mixture
becomes glossy, smooth and slightly thick. Add the sea salt and set aside to
cool for at least 5 minutes.
